WHAT IS ADAPTIVE DRIVER TRAINING?
- Adaptive driver training is an organized course of instruction for people with disabilities who want to learn how to drive using vehicles which have been modified to accommodate their disability. In Connecticut, the State Department of Motor Vehicles offers evaluation, instruction and licensing of people with disabilities who need special equipment to drive a car. The service takes place at the individual's home, place of work, or rehabilitation facility. Handicapped Driver Training Inspectors evaluate driving and determine the appropriate modifications needed for the vehicle. Driving lessons are conducted using the State’s specially equipped driver-training vehicles. Most referrals are through the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services or private physical therapists, but self-referral is accepted. People living in isolated areas of the state have priority.
- Private companies also provide adaptive driver training.
